A chair that's brilliant for someone 165 cm tall can be genuinely bad for someone at 190 cm — same chair, different bodies. Fit ranges on product pages are the most useful numbers in the spec sheet, if you know how to read them. Here's the short course.
The three numbers that decide fit
Seat height range
Sit with feet flat and knees at about 90 degrees — the distance from floor to the crease behind your knee is the seat height you need. The chair's range should bracket that number with room to spare on both sides, because shoes and desk height shift it.
Seat depth
The two-to-three-finger rule: that's the gap you want between the seat's front edge and the back of your knees. Longer thighs need deeper seats — which is why depth adjustment (or depth options, like the Omni SE's 45 cm and 48 cm seats) matters more for taller sitters than almost any other feature.
Load rating
A load rating is a tested engineering number, not a suggestion. One nuance worth knowing: ratings under the North American BIFMA standard and the European EN1335 standard are tested differently, so the same chair can carry two different numbers — both true. We list which standard applies wherever a chair carries both.

Using each manufacturer's published fit data:
- Herman Miller Aeron comes in three actual sizes — not adjustments, different chairs: Size A for roughly 147–163 cm (rated 136 kg), Size B for roughly 157–183 cm (159 kg) — the fit for most people — and Size C for roughly 178–198 cm (181 kg). The overlaps are real: between sizes, arm length and thigh length decide.
- Herman Miller Embody Gaming Chair is one size, rated to 136 kg, with seat height spanning 40.5–52 cm and seat depth 38–46 cm — wide enough to cover most adult builds without size-picking.
- LiberNovo Omni SE publishes a 153–186 cm fit range (136 kg under BIFMA testing) with the two seat-depth options doing the tall-sitter work.
Quick guide by height
- Under 160 cm: prioritise chairs whose seat height range goes genuinely low — the Aeron Size A exists precisely for this band.
- 160–185 cm: the sweet spot — most well-designed chairs fit, including Aeron B, the Embody and the Omni SE in either depth.
- Over 185 cm: check seat depth before anything else. Aeron Size C and the Omni SE's 48 cm seat are built for this range.
